Nature Conservation and Research
Nature conservation in a national park is not restricted to the conservation of a certain status but means a dynamic and process-oriented type of protection. Since the natural development process in a protected area should be widely undisturbed, national parks are ideal places for certain research activities such as inventories, ecological long-term studies and monitoring.

Several projects of species protection are carried out in the national parks aiming at the return of the bearded vulture and originally native trout in the Hohe Tauern, for instance, or the European pond turtle and European mudminnow projects in the Danube Floodplain National Park. Further projects concern endangered animal species such as the great bustard, the golden eagle and the white-tailed eagle.
