How much forest is there in Austria?

Austria is one of the countries with the most abundant forests in Europe. 47% of the federal territory, i.e. 3,924,000 hectares, are covered by forest.

For decades the forest area has been increasing by an average of 7700 hectares/year. Arithmetically, there is about 0.5 hectare of forest for every Austrian. In total, the Austrian forests have a growing stock of 988 million cubic metres, which increases by 27.3 million m³ each year. Only 19.5 million m³ are felled per year. This means that the annual timber harvest accounts for even less than 2% of our total stock; however, loaded onto a train this quantity would reach from Paris to Moscow.
