Why do foresters fell healthy trees?
Because only healthy trees supply healthy wood. Forest management means management in harmony with nature, with consideration for natural development cycles and based on a knowledge of ecosystems.
Today’s forest is a cultural landscape that has been sculpted by human hand, and true primeval forests are limited to some relics. Whilst the primeval forest is left to itself in the cycle of becoming and passing, human interventions control the development of the cultivated forest. Forest tending measures improve the stability of the forests and promote desirable tree species, the felling of old trees creates light and space for fast, natural forest regeneration or for afforestation. The harvesting of old trees that are ready for felling anticipates the decaying phase of the primeval forest, thus ensuring that the resource wood can be used economically and preventing a large-scale collapse of the forests. This forest development control guarantees that the forest can fulfil all its functions – especially its protective function – sustainably. Despite these human interventions, the forest is still the most natural element of landscapes, and the prime natural resource.
